What is domain name? :A domain name is an identification string that defines a realm of administrative autonomy, authority or control within the Internet.
Simply put in a layman’s terms, Domain name is the unique identification (name) of your website that serve as part of your website url (link).
For exampe: You have a business name “Cold and Ice Industries” and you want to get a website, the first thing you do is to identify what users would type in their browser to get your business online. For this, you would suggest “coldandice.com”. Notice that i didn’t include https:// or www. as part of the domain name?
Some Factors to consider before choosing a domain name
- Readability: You wouldn’t wouldn’t work to choose a very difficult, awkward or confusing terms for your domain name.
- Ease of Spelling: Ensure that the domain you are choosing will not be difficult for people to spell.
- Use Abbreviation or Acronym: If the name of your business is too long, (e.g Network For Africa Infrastructural Development and Transparency), consider shorting it e,g NAIDAT, your new domain name would be naidat.org
- Avoid Using Repeating Letters: E.g lipssick.com, magiccake.co, etc.
Chosing from the various domain extensions.
Domain name extensions simply mean the pointers added to your domain name. Examples of domain name extensions are .com, .ng, .net, .com.ng, .biz,
The particular domain name extension one chooses is determine by the purpose of the website and the purchaser’s budget.

.com.ng: This also for commercial businesses, the major difference between this and .com is that .com.ng has a geo-targeting. This is useful for SEO of local business and directories.
.org: This is universally used by nonprofit organizations. Websites using this extension are not (or less) monetised and accepts donations.
.ng: This is Nigerian domain name extension. It is a pointer that any website running this extension is run by/in Nigeria(n)
