As a web developer who have worked with lots of clients, even the non-tech savvy ones who desire to get a website for their business/organization, “what are the things I need” has always been a constant question.

In this blog blog post, I will give a detailed explanation of what you really need to get a website running. In this article I will assume you don’t have any idea on how to go about this . I will also assume that you want to hire a web developer to create one for you.

In nutshell, although there are several types of websites, no matter the type that you need, they are all narrows down to three things;

  1. Domain Name
  2. Hosting Package
  3. Content

While the nos 1-2 shares great similarity for all websites (little differences), no 3 is what defines and set a website apart from other types of website. In website design and development, ‘Content is king!”

Now lets explain each one after the other

Domain Name

What is domain name? :A domain name is an identification string that defines a realm of administrative autonomy, authority or control within the Internet.

Simply put in a layman’s terms, Domain name is the unique identification (name) of your website that serve as part of your website url (link).

For exampe: You have a business name “Cold and Ice Industries” and you want to get a website, the first thing you do is to identify what users would type in their browser to get your business online. For this, you would suggest “coldandice.com”. Notice that i didn’t include https:// or www.  as part of the domain name?

Some Factors to consider before choosing a domain name
  1. Readability: You wouldn’t wouldn’t work to choose a very difficult, awkward or confusing terms for your domain name.
  2. Ease of Spelling: Ensure that the domain you are choosing will not be difficult for people to spell.
  3. Use Abbreviation or Acronym: If the name of your business is too long, (e.g Network For Africa Infrastructural Development and Transparency), consider shorting it e,g NAIDAT, your new domain name would be naidat.org
  4. Avoid Using Repeating Letters: E.g lipssick.com, magiccake.co, etc.
Chosing from the various domain extensions.

Domain name extensions simply mean the pointers added to your domain name. Examples of domain name extensions are .com, .ng, .net, .com.ng, .biz,

The particular domain name extension one chooses is determine by the purpose of the website and the purchaser’s budget.
.com: For commercial business
.net: For internet based business less or no physical address; however, when .com domain name extension for commercial businesses are not available,  .net and other extentions can suffice.
.com.ng: This also for commercial businesses, the major difference between this and .com is that .com.ng has a geo-targeting. This is useful for SEO of local business and directories.
.org: This is universally used by nonprofit organizations. Websites using this extension are not (or less) monetised and accepts donations.
.ng: This is Nigerian domain name extension. It is a pointer that any website running this extension is run by/in Nigeria(n)
etc.

Hosting Package:

After getting your domain, purchasing your hosting package/plan is the next step. There are various hosting companies both foreign and local. Hosting your website contents takes your website online. when people visit your website, the content you have upload/saved on the website is served to them by your web host. There are various hosting packages available depending on the usage of the website.

Content:

When it comes to website, content is king!. Contents constitute everything you want to place on your website such as texts, images, docs, files, videos, etc. Anything you want to store on the website when private or public makes up the content of the website.

Recap: W ehave establishd that for you to own a website, assuming you are hiring a developer/designer, you will need a domain name, hosting and content. However, most developers include the cost of hosting and purchasing your domain name in their service charges. In this instance you will need just contents, however, you can always ask!.

Took a chance after meeting Uchenna on Twitter, gave him a job to redesign an existing polestar-marine.com website. He didn’t just deliver an excellent, breathtaking and world class job but it was also timely.

This young man is simply fabulous in what he does and I’ll not hesitate to recommend him to anyone or corporate organizatioin that require his service.
